Procedural Generation- 7 Reasons why it is the FUTURE of Battle Royales and why YOU should use it
About me:
Hi everyone, I’m EmperorNecro, the creator of Candyfront, a multiplayer battle royale that uses procedural generation in the form of tile-based/ chunk-based generation. I also own a youtube channel if you are interested in Candyfront:
Reasons why you should use procedural generation:
1. Not time consuming. Indie studios won’t have the time to create many types of maps, however they will have the time to create 30-100 tiles. Let’s assume the world was just 9 tiles large. Even if they made only 30 tiles, there are 19683000000000 different possibilities. And most worlds aren’t 9 tiles large.
2. File size. If you are trying to port to a phone or tablet market (or perhaps Nintendo), you might want to keep the file size small given their limited storage.
3. Bottom-Up approach vs Top-Down approach. In a team game, you are more likely to need a bigger top-down approach as you will focus more on the “team” strategy aspect than the individual combat, however Battle Royale games are about individual experiences not a collective victory.
4. You can use file space for previously handmade maps for other stuff such as pickups, a wider variety of weapons and even more characters.
5. Procedural Characters, not just animation but their whole body. Procedural Characters mean that players will nearly always perhaps have a different character to their friend making it so that every player feels truly unique.
6. In Battle Royales a good spawn point matters less, as good loot will make you only a bigger target perhaps even make the situation worse for you.
7. In Battle Royales, since games don’t need to be saved, procedural generation in battle roylae games can be made and destroyed after the game saving valuable storage for the player, which games like Minecraft for example store their worlds on the client side taking up storage.
Conclusion:
Procedural Generation could be a good way to save time and at the same time increase the number of players of your game. I use it in my current map, Cave Chambers which you can learn more about it from this video:
